Learn when children should visit the orthodontist to get braces, what to expect at the first orthodontic visit, and how early treatment can guide healthy smiles.
As parents, we’re all used to regular check-ups for our young ones – eyesight, hearing, growth charts. But one that often slips under the radar is an early orthodontic check.
Orthodontic care is more than just straightening teeth; it’s a key part of your child’s overall dental health. After all, we all want our children to grow up smiling confidently — and sometimes, those young smiles need a little early guidance.
This guide covers the essentials of orthodontic care for kids, including when to see an orthodontist, what to expect on your first visit, and how early treatment can help set the stage for a healthier, happier smile.
Quick Facts: Early Orthodontic Check-ups
1. 7 years old
The AAO recommends a first orthodontic visit by 7 years, even if your child’s teeth look perfectly fine!
2. Braces aren’t usually needed right away
For most kids, the first visit is simply for reassurance and regular monitoring.
3. Early intervention can simplify treatment
If an issue is spotted, gentle interceptive treatment can guide growth and often prevent more complex problems later on.
When should my kid see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that kids have their first orthodontic check-up at the age of 7.
Even if your child’s teeth look perfectly fine, there could be hidden bite issues, jaw growth concerns, or eruption problems developing beneath the surface. Catching these early often simplifies treatment and may help prevent complicated issues down the line.
Will my child need Braces right away?
Not always! In most cases, immediate treatment isn’t required. Your orthodontist will often simply keep “an eye on things,” monitoring your child’s dental development as they grow. This ongoing observation is invaluable, as it ensures that if intervention is needed, we can step in at the right moment for the most efficient treatment and the best results.
Some issues however, require more urgent attention. In those cases, your orthodontist may recommend a short, focused phase of care called interceptive treatment. The goal isn’t to rush your child into braces, but to gently guide their growth at the right time and prevent more complicated problems later on.
For example, if an upper front tooth starts to erupt behind the lower teeth (a crossbite), your orthodontist might suggest a removable appliance, Invisalign First, or sectional braces to correct the bite before it causes long-term damage.
What are the different options for early orthodontic treatment in kids?
There are several types of appliances that can be used for interceptive orthodontic treatment. Depending on your child’s specific needs, your orthodontist may recommend:
- Removable appliances (for isolated issues)
- Invisalign First (clear aligners designed for younger patients)
- Sectional braces (braces on just a few teeth, rather than the full set)
- Growth modification appliances (to guide jaw growth)
These treatment options are all designed to be targeted and efficient, without overwhelming your child.
What happens on your first visit?
You and your child can expect a friendly, relaxed visit designed to put them at ease. During the appointment, our orthodontic team will:
- Check the number and position of baby and adult teeth, to see if everything is developing on track for their age;
- Examine jaw growth to spot any early signs of issues such as underbite, increased overjet (where upper teeth stick out), or facial asymmetry;
- Look out for any tooth eruption issues that might benefit from early intervention;
- Perform an intra-oral scan, offering a clear, interactive 3D view of your child’s teeth – which can be helpful in explaining the dental development and documenting any changes over time;
- And if necessary, take X-rays to get a more detailed look at what’s happening beneath the surface.
Most importantly, the visit is gentle and focused on giving you clear answers so you can make the best decision for your child’s growing smile.
