Considering braces but worried about what you have heard? Many people believe common myths like “braces are only for kids” or “they’re too painful”. Here are 5 common myths about braces, explained.
Myth 1: Braces are only for kids and teenagers
Answer: While it’s true that many people get braces during their teenage years, they are by no means just for kids. At the National Dental Centre Singapore (NDCS) , the number of adult orthodontic patients jumped by more than 50% between 2011 and 2017, from 244 to 375 patients.
Adults seek orthodontic treatment for various reasons, including correcting dental issues that were never addressed in their youth or for aesthetic improvements. With advancements in orthodontic technology, options like Invisalign are discreet, making them popular among adults.
Myth 2: Braces are extremely painful
Answer: Braces treatment involves some discomfort, but it is not “extremely painful.” The most common sensation is a feeling of pressure or soreness in your teeth and gums, which typically occurs for a few days after adjustments.
This discomfort can usually be managed with a soft-food diet and orthodontic wax (to minimise abrasion from the brackets). You may request this from your orthodontist.
Myth 3: Braces treatment is too long
Answer: The duration of braces treatment varies widely depending on the complexity of the case. While some complex cases can take 2 to 3 years, many treatments can be completed in 18 to 24 months.
The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) states that the duration depends on factors like the patient’s age, the severity of the malocclusion, and patient compliance. The key to a timely treatment is following your orthodontist’s instructions, maintaining good oral hygiene, and attending all scheduled appointments.
Myth 4: You can’t play sports or instruments when wearing braces
Sports: A custom-fitted orthodontic mouthguard is a simple yet effective solution. It protects the soft tissues of the mouth from injury and also shields your braces from damage. It’s a small investment that offers big protection.
Instruments: Playing wind instruments with braces may require a slight adjustment period. Your lips and mouth will need time to adapt to the change. You may use orthodontic wax to protect your lips, employing more air support instead of relying on lip pressure.
Myth 5: Braces are too expensive
Answer: The cost of braces can be a significant investment, but it’s important to view it as a long-term investment in your oral health. While the cost can vary, it is more accessible than many people think.
