Missing Teeth: Is this the end?
We understand that losing teeth can impact one’s confidence, leading them to smile less in photos or even hold back during conversations. The simple answer to the question, ‘Is this the end?’ is a resounding no.
Explore the types of tooth replacements and their procedures. See which option suits your lifestyle the best.
Types of tooth replacements
Dental implants
Dental implants are a permanent tooth-replacement solution that mimics natural teeth. The entire treatment process typically takes six months to 1 year and is completed under local anaesthesia.
Procedure:
1.Health Assessment
A thorough assessment of your health is performed to test the ability to accept the implant before starting the treatment plan.
2. Surgical Placement
A minor surgical procedure is carried out to place the titanium fixtures into the jawbone. If needed, a bone or gum graft may be performed to ensure sufficient support before implant insertion.
3.Healing and Restoration
The healing phase will usually last 2 to 3 months, allowing the implant to fuse with the bone. Once healed, the connecting piece (abutment) and the final custom crown are attached.
4. Post-Operative Care
Pain medications will be prescribed to manage any discomfort, and clear aftercare guidance will be provided by our specialists to ensure optimal and rapid healing.
Dental Bridges
A dental bridge is a fixed restorative prosthesis used to replace one or more missing teeth. It works by “shaving” down the healthy adjacent teeth (called abutment teeth) so they can anchor the multi-unit bridge that covers the gap.
Procedure:
1.Initial Assessment and Preparation
Your dentist will first check the health of the adjacent support teeth. A small amount of enamel is carefully reduced from the supporting teeth, and an impression is taken to craft your custom bridge in a lab.
2. Temporary Bridge
A temporary bridge will be cemented to the adjacent teeth to protect the supporting teeth. 💡A pro tip: avoid sticky, chewy and hard food, and try to chew on the other side of your mouth.
3. Final Placement
During your second visit, the temporary bridge is removed, and the permanent bridge is cemented after testing its fit. You can then show your full smile again within 3 to 7 days.
Dentures
Dentures are removable appliances that replace several missing teeth (a partial denture) or an entire arch (a full denture). They are designed to match the look of your natural gums and teeth. They are a non-invasive option for teeth replacement.
Procedure:
The whole procedure duration depends on the complexity of the case.
1. Measure and Impression
Precise measurements and impressions of your mouth are taken to create a customised ‘bite’ and fit.
2. Trial Fitting
You will return for a trial fitting to ensure the feel and function of the dentures are comfortable and correct.
3. Final Collection
Once the new dentures are ready from the lab, you will collect them during a subsequent visit. After receiving your dentures, you might to take a few days to get fully used to chewing and eating with them.
💡A pro tip: Gently rinse your dentures after each meal with warm or cold water. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush with gentle soap or approved denture cleaner to brush both the inside and outside of the dentures.
