What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure designed to save a tooth that has become infected or inflamed. When the pulp, the soft tissue inside the tooth, becomes infected, it can cause severe pain and discomfort. Root canal treatment involves removing the infected pulp, cleaning the root canals, and sealing the tooth to prevent further infection.

Do I need Root Canal Treatment?

Symptoms

  • Severe toothache
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums
  • A dark spot on the tooth
  • A persistent pimple on the gums

If you’re experiencing these symptoms, please consult our specialists for reassurance. Root canal treatments can save your tooth from an extraction, and is less invasive than replacing it with an implant.

Root canal treatment will usually require 1 to 2 visits depending on the complexity of the condition. It can take between 30 to 90 minutes to complete.

The procedure may also require multiple appointments to allow the tooth to dry before disinfecting and filling, which will affect the total length of time required.

Procedure process

  1. Consultation: At the first visit, our dentist will examine your tooth and take an X-ray to determine whether a root canal treatment is required.
  2. Disinfecting Stage: During the root canal treatment itself, our dentist will provide a local anaesthetic to the affected area before removing the infected pulp. He will then disinfect the tooth to remove all bacteria, and shape the inside of your root canal
  3. Filling: The cavity is then filled and sealed to prevent future infection.
  4. Crown Placement: After the root canal treatment, a crown or other restoration method can be used to protect the tooth and restore it to full function.

FAQ

Root canal treatment is done under local anaesthesia.

The objective of root canal treatment is to relieve the toothache due to inflammation or infection of the tooth pulp.

Just take note that for the first few days after treatment, your tooth may feel sensitive, especially if there was pain or infection before the procedure. To manage this, take the medication prescribed by our dentist.

In most cases, your root canal-treated tooth will last as long as your other natural teeth.

In rare instances, the tooth may also become painful or infected even after a successful treatment. This usually signifies new decay or leakage. We can perform the root canal treatment again to salvage your tooth.

You can typically resume normal daily activities on the same day. However, please avoid chewing or biting on the treated tooth until it is restored by the dentist.
